What You Walk Through Inside

The 25,000-square-foot exhibition moves through a series of interconnected rooms, each dedicated to a different section of Michelangelo’s work in the Sistine Chapel. The nine central panels from Genesis, including The Creation of Adam, the most reproduced painting in human history, anchor the first section and are displayed at a scale that lets you see the full composition and the individual figure details simultaneously. The surrounding ancestor lunettes, the prophets and sibyls, and the ignudi are all present in full.

Three life-size sculptural representations are positioned throughout: Michelangelo’s David, reproduced at the same scale as the original in the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence; Moses, from the tomb of Pope Julius II in Rome; and the Pietà, the marble masterpiece housed in St. Peter’s Basilica. All three are works most visitors have never seen at this scale and proximity outside of their original locations.

The Last Judgment Room is the final and most powerful space in the exhibition. A cathedral-like environment with pews and immersive sound, it surrounds visitors with Michelangelo’s 1536 to 1541 fresco of the second coming of Christ and the final judgment of souls. The scale, the sound design, and the lighting are designed to evoke the experience of sitting in the Sistine Chapel itself rather than simply looking at a reproduction.
